Technical Sales Engineer – Power Transformers

Location: Easley / Greenville, South Carolina Area
Department: Sales / Business Development

Employee Status: Exempt
Reports To: VP of Sales Operations
Employment Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

The Sales Engineer serves as the technical cornerstone of a growing critical infrastructure business, bridging the gap between complex client requirements and global manufacturing and internal repair capabilities. This role acts as the primary technical resource for complex transformer projects involving hyperscale data centers, renewable energy facilities, and industrial operations. The Sales Engineer partners closely with sales teams, customers, and production personnel to design and deliver highly reliable medium-voltage transformer solutions and retrofits.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Sales & Application Engineering

  • Serve as the primary technical resource during proposal development for complex projects, particularly supporting data centers, renewable energy (solar and wind), and large industrial customers.

  • Review customer specifications, single-line diagrams, RFQs, and equipment schedules to develop technically compliant and commercially competitive solutions.

  • Specify and recommend appropriate transformer types—including medium-voltage padmount, unit substation, and epoxy dry-type transformers—while ensuring compliance with IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, and NEC standards.

  • Conduct on-site and virtual meetings with customers to present technical solutions, resolve specification conflicts, and advance opportunities through the sales cycle.

Controls, Monitoring & Retrofit Support

  • Act as the liaison between internal engineering, production teams, sales personnel, and customers, translating complex field test results and repair requests into actionable retrofit scopes for engineering and shop teams.

  • Evaluate surplus and used transformers to determine the feasibility of retrofitting them for high-reliability “second-life” applications.

  • Advise customers on protection and automation requirements related to their power infrastructure, ensuring compatibility with modern grid-edge applications and data center monitoring platforms.

  • Lead the specification and integration of smart transformer monitoring and control systems.

Internal Technical Enablement

  • Mentor and support inside sales staff and shop personnel on transformer fundamentals, application engineering, and critical infrastructure requirements.

  • Develop internal technical reference materials, application guides, and sales tools to strengthen team capability and confidence.

Knowledge, Skills & Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in transformer sales engineering, application engineering, switchgear, or power systems engineering with a focus on medium-voltage power systems (up to 35 kV).

  • Deep technical expertise in medium-voltage padmount transformers, liquid-filled unit substations, and cast resin/epoxy dry-type transformers.

  • Strong knowledge of IEEE, ANSI, and NEMA transformer standards.

  • Familiarity with NETA standards (ATS/MTS) and transformer testing, maintenance, and commissioning practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, single-line diagrams, specifications, utility interconnection agreements, and protection schemes.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred (PE license a plus). Equivalent hands-on field experience in transformer testing, repair, or service environments will also be considered.

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to operate effectively in both field environments and executive-level discussions.

  • Travel as required (typically less than 10%), primarily to customer job sites, project support visits, and occasional factory visits.
